More than £1.3 million was pumped into the local economy by Pembrokeshire Fish Week last year. Recent figures show the direct income of Fish Week 2011 totalled £1,314,882.

The annual festival, which celebrates the rich variety of fresh local fish and seafood, the county’s coastline and maritime heritage, is organised by Pembrokeshire County Council.

Kate Morgan, the Council’s food development manager, said Fish Week attracted some 25,000 visitors last year.

“More than a third visited from outside West Wales, with approximately 4,000 travelling from outside Wales,” she said.

“This shows that Pembrokeshire Fish Week is a valuable asset in attracting visitors to the County in the quieter ‘shoulder’ season between Whitsun and the summer holidays.”

Fish Week also provided a boost for participating businesses, with nearly two-thirds reporting more customers compared to an average week in June.

Fish Week boosts Pembrokeshire economy said Kate.

Voted number one in VisitBritain.com’s top 10 food festivals, Pembrokeshire Fish Week will be held this year between June 23rd and July 1st. The fishy festival has some 250 events from seashore foraging to guided beach walks, family fishing days, cookery workshops, and much more.

New for 2012 is a celebrity masterclass demonstration featuring three of Britain’s leading chefs as they each transform their fresh line caught haul into inventive seafood dishes.

Confirmed to date are Bryn Williams, winner of the BBC’s Great British Menu, Alyn Williams, Michelin-acclaimed proprietor of The Westbury in Mayfair, and Anthony Evans, presenter of S4C’s ‘Stwffio’ cookery programme.

The chefs will be fishing and diving for sustainable seafood off the Pembrokeshire coast, and transforming it later that day into inspiring recipes in the masterclass at the Torch Theatre, Milford Haven. ‘A fair fish for a fare dish’, the evening will be presented by food writer and broadcaster Simon Wright. Also new this year is the chance to learn about Indian fish cookery from acclaimed Kerala-born cookery star Anand George, founder of Cardiff’s New Purple Poppadom.

Anand will be holding two Indian fish curry masterclasses, and presenting an Indian fish cookery demonstration at Pembrokeshire Fish Week’s opening day at Milford Haven Marina.

Young chefs can also be inspired to cook delicious fish recipes in new cookery demos this year at Folly Farm adventure park with ‘Ant and Al’. S4C presenters Anthony Evans and Alun Williams will be dishing up family-friendly recipes and plenty of fishy fun. Young people can also enjoy expert fish filleting and cookery workshops in schools and at Milford Haven Marina, supported by Valero.

Pembrokeshire Fish Week opens with a great day for families and food-lovers at Milford Haven Marina on Saturday, June 23rd, with lots of activities, demonstrations, food, craft and produce stalls, and guided tours aboard the heritage tug ‘Brocklebank’ from Merseyside. New features this year include a pop up restaurant featuring a selection of top local restaurants, and a live music stage.

Pembrokeshire Fish Week will close with a new ‘Festival of the Sea’ at Saundersfoot Harbour on Sunday, July 1st.

From a relaxing evening trip on the Cleddau to adrenalin assured outdoor adventure there are plenty of ways for you to experience Pembrokeshire’s breathtaking coastline. Try eco fishing adventures in a kayak, coasteering, a taster session in sailing at Saundersfoot’s Festival of The Sea, or catch your supper on a mackerel fishing trip.
The festival is a fishing paradise for all levels – from the experienced angler to the beginner and to ‘just have a go’. Keen anglers can enjoy some excellent fishing and take part in sea angling and coarse fishing championships, whilst families and beginners have plenty of choice for fishing coaching at local fisheries throughout the county.

Launched this week, the new venture is very much a family affair, lead by Simon’s wife Mary-Ann and eldest son, Joel. The new Food Emporium is located in a converted cowshed in the village where the Wright family have lived for years, close to the A40 in Nantgaredig, Carmathenshire,

Simon says ‘The idea is to create a lovely place to buy food – it’s a shop and a casual café. We are selling food which you cannot normally find, it’s the sort of stuff we love, would recommend and would buy ourselves. All our produce is a bit unusual, much is local and it’s a place for food enthusiasts like us, filled with goods from small, interesting producers.”

The range includes homemade breads, fresh meats, local cheeses, charcuterie, vegetables, dried goods, unusual wines and beers. The café serves simple casual food such as, ‘amazing grilled local cheese sandwiches; pork belly buns; and proper breakfasts.’

“We’re having such a lovely time” comments Simon Wright “the range of products has escalated massively, but this is our chance to stock loads of fantastic produce which we’ve not been able to use in our restaurants. It’s an exciting time to be involved in food, as there is so much passion out there at the moment. The Food Emporium has given us the opportunity to talk to so many producers who we’ve had our eye on for ages. If you love food like we do, its like being a small child let loose in a sweetie shop!”

The crew are really proud of the brands we have on board so far. We have the brilliant, eco-friendly Rapanui from the Isle of Wight blazing a trail in garment production using renewable energy with award-winning traceability, and the forward-thinking, progressive street wear brand Sutsu, who create effortlessly cool garments with a genuine, positive commitment to the environment, their customers and their employees. We have the authentic, surf-inspired inkyDeep© creating quality, organic garments which encapsulate the sea and the origins of the waves, and the fantastic iSea, creating limited edition, made to measure, hand-printed eco surf wear with beautiful and original designs.

And borne from necessity on the Swiss ski slopes, we have the original and unforgettable Zaini Hats, offering unrivalled cosiness, colour and credibility, handmade in the Scottish Highlands. Also we have Oggy Wax™ the first cold water surf wax, made in the UK especially for UK waters, by The Cornish Surf Wax Company. And not forgetting the ethically driven Earth & Wear, selling sweat shop free No Sweat clothing along with the comfortable & durable Amazon flip flops, made in Brazil from recycled tyres.

We are so happy with the brands on board with us, and with THTC, the award-winning, eco clothing heavyweight in the pipeline, along with niche independents such as Atalante Speed, 21 Rope and Bhang Designs, things are looking bright! The new Rogue Store is always looking for new brands and we champion the independents, the locally sourced, the ecologically sound and the handmade.”

Available for use on iPhone and iPad, on a plate presents a delicious range of flexible recipes that encourage creative cooking, and equip the user with a set of clever tips and techniques via a unique visual approach.

Today, we carry mobile technology with us everywhere, so why not take it into the kitchen? For years, we have relied on cumbersome hard-to-follow cookbooks, which are difficult to refer to when away from the kitchen.

The forthcoming app from uChef – On a plate – will allow you to use your Apple mobile device as a simple one-touch highly illustrated cookbook. ‘On a plate’ can be easily taken anywhere and used on the move: to the shops to help you to check and identify the ingredients that you need to buy, or just browse it in a free moment to inspire the cooking of delicious freshly made meals.
